Clinical Survey of Patients in Intensive Care Unit from March 1990 to February 1992 in Korea University Anam Hospital

Abstract
The intensive care unit of Korea University Anam Hospital is a 48 bed medical, surgical and pediatric ICU which was established in 1961 since that time the size and facilities of the ICU have been changed.
We have analyzed 2369 ICU patients starting from March 1990 to February 1992.
@ES The results of analysis are as follows;
@EN 1) The number of patients in 1990 was 1081, in 1991 was 1288 and the total number of patients was 2369. The number of male patients was 1460 and female patients was 909.
2) The average admission day was 7.13 days in 1990, 6.78 days in 1991, and the overall average admission day was 7.00 days. The largest stay group was 3-5 days group, the rate of which was 35.9%.
3) The most frequent age group was 50-59 years group, the rate of which was 22.8%. Most of patients belonged to Internal Medicine which was 39.3% of the total patients.
4) The rate of acquired infection during stay in ICU was 10.5% in 1990, 16.8% in 1991 and the overall rate was 13.9%. The highest rate of the total infection in stay group was over 9 days group which was 59.7%, in age group was 50-59 years group
which
was 22.8%, and in department, was Internal Medicine which was 40.3%. The infection rate between operation and nonoperation grou was higher in non-operation group which was 66.7%, and the highest infection rate in operation group was head and neck
operation group; which was 57.3%. The most common infection site was pulmonary system the ratio of which to the total cases of infection was 44.8%.
5) The percentage of patients who received ventilatory support was 12.0% in 1990, 17.6% in 1991 and the average percentage was 15.1%. The highest ratio to the total cases of ventilatory support in stay group was 3-5 days group which was 35.0%,
in
age
group was 50-59 years group which was 22.7%, and in department was Chest Surgery which was 36.15. The ventilatory support rate between operation and non-operation group was higher in operation group which was 50.1% and the highest ventilatory
support
rate in operation groups was heart and mediastinum operation group which was 60.9%. The most common cause of ventilatory support was cardiovascular diseases which was 31.9% of the total causes. The infection rate in ventilatory patients was 23.5%
and
the mortality rate in ventilatory support patients was 34.7%.
6) The rate of operation related patients in ICU was 34.9% in 1990, 36.1% in 1991 and the overall rate was 35.5%. The highest ratio to the total operation related patients in stay group was 3-5 days group which was 37.2%, in age group was 50-59
years
group which was 25.6%, and in department was Chest Surgery which was 35.9%. The most common operation site was head and neck the ratio of which to the total cases of operation site was 37.6%. The infection rate in operation patients was 33.3% and
mortality rate was 17.2%.
7) The mortality rate was 13.2% in 1990, 12.9% in 1991 and the overall mortality rate was 13.0%. The highest ratio to the total mortality rate in stay group was 1-2 days group which was 42.1%, in age group was 50-59 years group which was 25.2%,
and in
department was Internal Medicine which was 54.0%. The most common cause of death was respiratory failure the rate of which was 25.2%.
From the above results, our hospital ICU has the characteristics-higher percentage in male patients, in 3-5 days stay group, in above 50 years age group and in Internal medicine department. The infection rate, operation rate and ventilatory
support
rate
have increasing and the mortality rate has decreasing tendency.
